We live in a suburb and it happens all the time that the door may be unlocked....between taking the dog out and getting the mail, and kids going out to play on our swing set etc etc. You sound like a delight

Yep. No unexpected guests.

This just happened to me on Monday. Kids and me were in pajamas late afternoon (and mine were really ugly pajamas), pretty unkempt, hair a mess, and cleaning closets upstairs. I had a phone call which I ignored since I wanted to finish my work. Suddenly my relative shows up on our doorstep and rings the bell many times. The kids ran down and peeped through the window and opened the door. They know not to open for strangers but since it was a relative they opened it.

It was so embarassing. Family member did mention they called, but who shows up unannounced when we don't answer the phone. I ran up quickly and changed into something better and came down. It was a bit strange but we ended up talking for half an hour and the relative left.

People just drop by with no notice at my parents' house in the Midwest all the time and I find it so odd, but I thought perhaps it was generational.

But I have noticed when visiting my friend in the suburbs in a smaller town that there is a lot more impromptu socializing than I have here. Pre-kids, I was rarely home on weekends (out shopping, etc.) so people know that they should call me and make plans before getting together. With cell phone technology, I agree that texting would be best.

Is there a reason you wouldn't text first and check to see if noon is a good time in case you might stop by?

The only people I know who stop by unannounced are this family who have no boundaries (we are not friends).

If you text and say I'm passing by your house, are you around? that's still better than just ringing the doorbell.

I agree. Half the time I don't even bother answering. Whatever.

You should get one of those doormats that say "GO AWAY!". They exist.

I haven't had anybody show up unannounced for years. 2 people have confused the floors and knocked on our door.

Yeah this is weird. The rest I get but this one...dropping off an item is different than someone dropping in for a visit. I’ve dropped off a dish I borrowed unannounced before . I didn’t ask to stay. It was all of two seconds.

The neighbor cane by to drop off the bowl (why is it strange for neighbor to have my bowl after a neighborhood potluck gathering?) and she is very chatty so of course she worked her way into our house and stayed, uninvited, for about 20 minutes while I crossed my arms over my bra-less chest.
