Perhaps he was driving too close to the side of the road & that is the reason his mirror broke.

And you could have been getting out of you car just like we all do everyday.

I have seen cars drive in the bike lane even when it is empty.

Thanks to the posters who weighed in. He said he doubts the mirror will cost more than a deductible for either of us so he plans to just have it repaired and send me a bill.
