Unless you can go pro in a money sport, it doesn't make financial sense. The difference between taking a D1 athletic scholarship and financial aid at an Ivy is that you can quit sports at an Ivy with no consequences once you're admitted. So a low/moderate income student could decide not to play football before ever suiting up and receive the same no-loan, full need financial aid for four years as if they played. At a D1, your athletic scholarship gets yanked if you quit or get hurt and you'd probably not be eligible for any financial aid besides loans and Pell grants.
