Actually there is a scene in the movie Ghost Busters, where Lewis the accountant is hosting a party. As his guests come in, he takes their coat and puts them on his bed.

There’s also a scene in a Judy Blume book where two guests f*ck on a pile of coats at a party, and the woman enjoys the sensation of mink on her bare ass as she’s about to come.

We have a coat tree just inside the front door and guests hang their coats there. If they don’t all fit, we hang the excess in our coat closet. We’re not big entertainers, so I don’t think we’ve ever entertained more than 25.

We got those rolly racks and set them in our rec room for large gatherings- like 40+ people. Those things disassemble.

I went to a party in a beautiful country home. It’s very large and spacious. But it was so warming when she said to take out our coats in the master bed. They is private space and it says you are my family now when you have permission to do that. It was like getting a right of passage and I felt so loved! Incredibly loved to be honest and like family. From now on I will always fo that for guests too. It’s old fashioned and my grandmas family on mother’s side always did it. And grandma still does it!

We clear the hall closet for guests' coast and put any coats there onto a bed. Seems more civilized than having people paw through a pile of coats on your bed to find their coats.

I think if your coat closet is completely full, it’s better to put your own coats on the bed and use the closet for guests.

Or, for a huge crowd, use a rack in the foyer or basement.

The bed thing is very common and I’m not offended by it or anything, I just don’t like it.

Me too, but I also grew up overseas. I don't want anyone's coats on the bed (people take public transport here, walk their dogs in coats). We lived in a small condo for a while and did the same thing: we would empty our entry closet to give room for guest's coats. That, and a small coat rack at the entrance was plenty.

Bed is very normal. I usually clear out space in the coat closet when we’re having more than a couple people over. I know someone who has a freestanding clothes hanger and they put that in their home office and hang guest coats there.

Duh! That’s why you put them on the kids’ beds.

I think you should make everyone carry their coats and try to balance drinks and small plates of food while making awkward conversation. Fun! Happy holidays.

Coat pile on the bed is very normal.

For such a large gathering I’m surprised you don’t have a coat check or a coat rack that you rent and put somewhere. Couldn’t fathom the process of gathering coats at the end of the party or when people head out. Sounds chaotic.
