Actually there is a scene in the movie Ghost Busters, where Lewis the accountant is hosting a party. As his guests come in, he takes their coat and puts them on his bed.

We use my front closet that stays 3/4 cleaned out. I moved kids coats to a wall rack nearby and swap seasonal so there's lots of room.

Coats went on the master bed
Now we put them over the chair in the office, or in the spare room on the bed.

When we expectEd more than 2 people over we would move all of our family coats into a room (on a chair not bed) and leave the coat closet and extra hangers for the guests. I do this in my own house now. Before any large party the coat rack is empty.
