Not np, and don't have a CITATION but I just got back from San Diego and to think, I used to want to relocate there, the place is a s hole now. Yep, fleas in our hotel jumping up from the lobby carpet and hepatitis is very prevalent according my friends and family who live there. They, btw, are horrified at what is happening to that beautiful city, but then again, they voted for the politicians that have let them down. And, sadly, will continue to vote for the same politicians, they are sadly of the same mindset as most people of the left, it isn't there problem until it is actually in their own homes.

So all you have is anecdotal evidence, no actual data, huh?

Too bad.

Seriously?

Go visit a country like India with people living and defecating in the streets. Open, raw sewage. Do you not see how that leads to health problems? TB is just one issue.

Cities in India are actually trying to clean up these settlements and you want them to flourish here in the US?

No one wants them to flourish here. Obviously. The point is that these are human beings who will continue to need to defecate wherever you send them. Clearing out an encampment like this is not going to stop them from shitting on a daily basis. Come up with a civilized alternative for them.

Then those people need to be removed from the societal context and locked up. Forcibly and indefinitely.
Federal work camps

I’m the person who said it was a public health disaster waiting to happen. Government-run “work camps“ are also notorious for epidemics. This is what my undergrad degree focused on.

The government needs to build CCC-like camps for chronically homeless adults. They should be compulsory. The campers can rebuild national park infrastructure and trails or retrofit affordable homes with solar panel. Government should provide medical care, including mental health care as necessary, plus three squares a day and training. Once government meets those obligations, no one should have the right to beg, sleep and defecate on the street.

Chronically homeless adults have severe mental health or substance abuse problems. They are not able to do the type of work you mention. They will still defecate in the wrong places because they are very ill. Do you really want to give pickaxes to the same people you are afraid to ride the Metro with?

Then, when the problems come to their own neighborhood, they move away. Then vote in the same Democratic leadership that they ran away from.

Makes no sense to me.

Fecal matter. TB.

And safety. How long until someone is raped or stabbed? Unfortunately, it happens. We need a solution that is compassionate for the homeless and safe for everyone else.

It's pretty clear that the mayor does not care if people in DC get raped or stabbed, by a homeless person or anyone else.

True, so many of the rapes and stabbings in DC this past year have been BY homeless people. It's horrific, points to severe mental illness combined with homicidal/or sexually sadistic impulse. I am 100% in favor of compulsory mental health treatment for the chronic homeless who demonstrate no ability for self care, as well as housing plus work program (including starting with cleaning streets etc. With a gradient of training) to bring the non mentally ill to self sufficiency. I have zero issue with asking all homeless to earn their keep or demonstrate they are on a path to earn their keep (schooling, job training etc). That is not cruel, it is kind.

The chronic street homeless are not going to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when required to work. If they had that capacity they wouldn't be living in trash by the side of the road. They've all got serious issues - addiction, mental illness, plus age. They aren't going to be able to "earn their keep." They'll fail out of programs that require that, and then they'll end up living in trash by the side of the road again.

Yes, I love democrats -- normal americans with normal standards of decency, people who care about their fellow human beings, want to help those in need and want a government that reflects their normalcy and decency by taking care of those in need rather than being heartless and indifferent to them. yes, I do love democrats.

People seem to have forgotten that Reagan closed down the mental hospitals, without an adequate solution, and the homeless problem spiraled.

Reagan closed down the mental hospitals because the ultra liberal American Psychiatric Association forced him to do so because they provided inhumane treatment to the patients. One problem was exchanged for another.
