They absolutely do call them out. It's horribly rude. And it must be getting pretty prevalent, because the last plane I was on, there was an announcement (in a justifiably grumpy tone) about how there was to be no zooming, FaceTiming, or similar, and that if you didn't wear headphones for your music or video, they would ask you to turn off your device. Even if no one says anything, everyone hates you for doing these things.

If you are listening off camera and type into the chat vs. talking I actually think thats fine. If you're going to talk then definitely do not do it.

If you have no need to speak in the meeting as the OP stated, you are not key to nailing this deal. Just an unknown in the background.

It would be nice if you one at least get the audio to listen in (usually slides can be downloaded in advance). I don't think there is a straightforward way to do that, though.

It would be very rude to try to actively participate in a meeting, yes.

It is rude and possibly illegal (voice calls are banned in flight). Agreed with PP who said that long conversations in general in public are rude. Also, there is no guarantee that there will be network connectivity on the plane--it may be out of order or the plane may be swapped with one without the capability.

If the meeting is so important, then re-schedule the trip. If not, tell your boss that you will be unavailable for X number of hours.
