Are you assuming you know more than the Norwegian authorities? We are only getting the parent view since the Norwegian government hasn’t commented. I would think reunification would be high on their list of priorities, so maybe the situation is more dire than we know.

That photo reminds me of a family photo shoot I witnessed where the mom said stand still and smile or you will be spanked. They got a great photo, but now I can never look at these "perfect" family photos without thinking of that moment and feeling really sad for the kids.

I'm not meaning to do whataboutism here and if family separations are happening unjustly in Norway then that's a problem. But it's absolutely not "rare" in the US -- it's so common and blatant that many of us took to the streets to protest that it was happening.

I agree and I was only mildly spanked too. Frankly, some kids need it. My sister was wild and one time she tried to run into a main street (this was not the first time). She was a second from being killed by a passing car. My mom had finally grabbed her shirt before she was in the street, then she got spanked. She never ran out in the street again.

You said that it was not the first time your sister did that. So your mom KNEW she was likely to do this--why wasn't she holding your sister's hand or taking other measures to make sure it didn't happen. Your mother FAILED as a parent and then physically assaulted her own child!

The government in Norway has more power over its citizens than the US government. There are rules and laws about everything in Norway. The government provided substantial benefits but is in charge of everything in return. Everyone is expected to live their life the same way and fit in.
