Some posters are getting confused.

We're not talking about someone having a mistress with the wife's knowledge. Or people sleeping around casually like college kids. Or the old fashioned polygamy of a husband with multiple wives. I believe a throuple is specifically referring to when all three people are involved together emotionally and sexually.

In the old polygamy relationships as found in ancient days and even in some parts of the world today, the wives are separate and there's many rules and regulations governing these kinds of marriages because they were never thought of as polygamous as we understand the term today. And these polygamous marriages emerged as a way for better off men to help support excess women in the old societies. It's why as time progressed, they disappeared. Even in Muslim cultures they're quite rare and generally only very rich/sheikhs go that route and it's because they can afford to support multiple wives.

I don't think I've ever met or heard of anyone remotely "normal" who was in a polyamorous relationship. In every cases there was always something off, dysfunctional or involving emotional manipulation or emotional neediness.

Not legally, but polygamy is the practice of having more than one husband or wife at the same time.

And the multiple wives (traditionally) are not in a romantic relationship with each other.

Call the guy what you want but you are ignoring history. The gay community was ground zero for the spread of aids. There is no denying that. Although anyone who is sexually active can catch anything STDs in general run rampant among certain demographics and not so much among the rest of the population. I'd be more specific but my comments were deleted in the past so I'll leave it at that.

I have some friends who all three live together and have for years. No kids. She's a little younger and I think she's become a lot more capable and happier with them. I was skeptical initially that they were taking advantage of her because she did seem so much more vulnerable, but she seems a lot less vulnerable now.

Not entirely true, HIV has remained pretty much only in the gay, prostitution and drug user community.

My friend and her husband were polyamorous until one of his girlfriends tried to end their marriage. I don't know, but at least hope they aren't doing that anymore for their 4 kids. They are millennials.

Boomer here. IN one with my wife and another woman. But it's just my wife and I as a couple, and the other woman and I as a different couple. They (the women) don't get together and we don't all get together. This was my wife's idea as I have a higher libido and enjoy some kinkier things that she doesn't. It actually works out far better than I ever could have imagined.
