I would be very surprised if your child did not get into the Center with that score. It doesn't matter that the verbal & quantitative were lower. And no, I do not think the scores indicate your child has a learning disability.

How come you would be surprised if that child did not get into the center with that test score? I ask because my child had very similar results - a perfect score (146) on the non-verbal, a 118 on the quantitative, and a very low (106) on the verbal. Her NNAT was 124. She was sick on the day of the verbal, and her teacher told me she jumped up to get a tissue after each question that finally the teacher just put the tissue box on her desk, so I do think she is capable of more in that area. I'm concerned she won't get in because of that super low score even though she got a perfect score on the non-verbal. Any insight from those experienced? Thanks!

PP here. Also, should I be concerned about how uneven DC's scores are? Does it hint toward a learning disability?

We plan to submit some artwork (DC is a very good artist) and a teacher recommendation from a former school, as well as a letter from us. ANything else that we should do?

Request a meeting with the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) at your child's school. The AART can then show you what was submitted to the screening committee. From there you can decide which work samples can be submitted along with your own parent questionnaire. In addition, you can submit WISV-IV scores (if you have them) as well as a letter of recommendation (from a coach, a music teacher, a Scout leader, etc.).

My DD met the cutoff score. So I guess she will be in the screening pool. Now I am wondering what can I do to improve her chances? What kinds of work samples are helpful to submit(Writing samples? Drawings or what else)? How many referrals do they need? Does classroom teacher give referrals to every student in the pool? Do I have to ask for it from her? Any advise?

Thanks for the info.Our dd goes to the FCPS and she is in 3 grade. However, since we moved to the dist. in sep, she was able to take the CogAT in Oct.
We recd the results around the Dec 18 and the ineligibity letter yesterday. She has scored only in mid 120's. i am particularly surprised by her math score as she is good at math and that is what pulled her comp score down.
THe letter mentioned that we can appeal by jan 15th , with "new info ". The appeal form asks for new test results- such as WISC IV,etc
We can also submit a referal by feb 5th for 2010-11.

I am going to do my best , as I know she will thrive in an accelerated class.

I guess there are two groups on this thread who have been waiting for "results" (Forgive me, this might have been obvious to everyone else!) The first group are those who do not have children currently attending a Fairfax County school who submitted applications/files in November 2009 requesting that their child be placed in the Level IV AAP for school year 2010-11. Some of those parents would have submitted only NNAT and/or CogAT results and others might have submitted WISC or other tests. The letters responding to these November applications apparently went out at the beginning of this week and if their DC was not admitted, these parents are now considering appeals. The second group are FCPS parents who have received or are waiting for test scores to see if their DC is eligible for the AAP screening pool.

Quoted PP, your question might already have been answered above, but I have heard that FCPS might "trust" the George Mason University testing results more than tests by other private practitioners. (This is just "hearsay") The AAP portion of the FCPS website links to the George Mason University website. I believe the fee for the WISC is around $375. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific recommendations if you already had WISC testing performed and are seeking a referral to someone else to have your dd re-tested. If that is the case, you could call whoever tested your dd originally (if you haven't already) -- they might have advice, including confirming whether your dd can take the CogAT, NNAT or WISC under the time frame limitations, and suggesting other tests that could be possibilities. A retest with the NNAT or Cogat within 6 months wouldn't be valid, but if he hasn't taken the WISC in the last 12 months, you could pursue WISC testing.

My DS's scores were borderline, just under the cutoff. However, he began some new medication around the time of testing that seemed to be seriously affecting his ability to concentrate. We've since made some changes and want to retest at GMU this weekend.

Their site says you can only retest every 6 months, but it is not clearly worded. Can we do a retest and have it be valid?

Not eligible for AAP or not in the screening pool? Those are two very different things. If the scores were close to the cut-off, I'd submit a parent referral with just the Cogat/NNAT scores, and pursue WISC testing, but not submit it yet. If declared not eligible when those decisions go out in May, then, if the WISC was good, appeal and submit the WISC results.

For the WISC alone. I think $350-$450 is pretty standard.

Still no scores at all for us! I called this school earlier this week and they apparently haven't gotten around to sending them out. they said we'd "probably" get them "by the end of the week." I doubt DC will get in the screening pool anyway. I'm really just curious to see the scores and see if they are even between the tests or not. I have some concerns about DC and I want to see if the scores shed any light on them.
