Yes, if you read the Post expose gun charges are routinely pled way down in DC. But residents who want to own them legally have to jump through 10 million hoops. Funny where the focus is.
If you think I want some of my nice but dumb and/or drunk law-abiding neighbors owning guns, you're out of your mind. I'm happy to live in their midst but I don't trust them with guns.

I think you missed the point.

Oh yes, and ICE. DC is a sanctuary city so I guess you'll love having criminals returned to your block all in the name of brotherhood.

They letting all them dudes in jail from the White Brotherhood out here in DC?!!!

I live in NoVa and there are guns and shooting ranges everywhere. They aren’t a problem here.

Where do you think they go to , to steal the guns, or buy the stolen guns from? Most are imported from VA.

But if guns WERE the problem, Northern VA would have just as much, if not more, crime as DC, since there are wayyyyyyyy more guns in northern VA

But that's not the case, is it? No, it isn't.

Must be SOMETHING else then, huh?

It’s the poverty, stupid.

No.

Virginia has far more poor people than DC

It’s the poverty RATE, stupid.

For someone who has no clue WTF they're talking about, you're really fond of calling people stupid.

Pp is correct about the difference between a rate (or a proportion) and the frequency (or number). It has to do with what percentage of the population are poor. Since Virginia has over 8 million people and DC has less than a million people, it wouldn't be surprising if Virginia had a higher number or frequency of poor people. But it would still be possible for DC to have a higher proportion of people living in poverty than Virginia.

Okay I just did a quick google. I don't know if these rates are from the same year but it will give you an idea of the difference between proportions and frequencies. Virginia's poverty rate is around 10% while DC 's poverty rate is around 18%. Plus the poor in DC are in a much smaller area geographically while Virginia is of course much larger and the poor are more spread out than in DC. (And of course this is always the problem with comparing DC to states rather than other cities.)

I will say that pp shouldn't have called you stupid, however. That was not helpful.

Nope, it's guns. Guns are the problem - not the only problem, but definitely the problem.

Then why isn't Northern VA's gun crime rate as high as DC's? If guns are the problem - as you said - then Northern VA should be far more violent than it is, given the huge numbers of guns there. But it's not. So clearly, more guns =/= more violent crime.

So what does? What's the difference between the place with far fewer guns and very high violent crime, and the other place with guns everywhere but comparatively little violent crime?

Please answer the question and stop dodging it.
Poverty.

The existence of white people.
White people are not getting killed in my neighborhood so you must be saying that white people are making people shoot each other. Yeah, that makes no sense.

I'm not kidding -- there is good evidence that discontinuing leaded gasoline was the reason for crime rates starting to go down in the 90's. That was the first generation raised post-leaded gasoline.

This is what I have been thinking as well.

There are many places in this country with higher poverty rates and dramatically lower violent crime rates.
