I do not mind saying it to my kids. When I get my class list, they become my responsibility for the year and I hope to impact them for life. I have now had my first class of kids going off to college. They still thank me, say hi, and remember I tried my best to help them learn and grow. I keep in touch with 30% of all my students. I do look after them as my own too. I am not sure I would say it to middle school kids but maybe show I care and listen to them when they need an ear.

There's a time and a place. Some people use it loosely. I taught and did love my students--even the ones who gave me trouble, but I'm not sure I told them that. Care about? Yes. I think attitude is better than words.

I know that my own sixth grade teacher definitely did not love me. Not sure she loved anybody.

Not the Principal, but Mr. Rogers told me I was loved and that I was special. I miss him.

Thank you 19:38! OP if you can’t ynderstand what the principal is trying to say then maybe you should take a hard look in the mirror. We can say we love movies, sports teams etc, but the idea of loving students in the same vein as love your fellow man seems foreign and wrong to you? I highly doubt this person expects you to love your students as much as your own children, I suspect he meant if you don’t truly enjoy working with students, then you are in the wrong profession. Teaching, like nursing and first responders, is a noble professions that takes a special kind of person.
