Thanks for your question! We are in a similar situation with our child playing one serious sport and advanced band, trying to decide between Blair/RMIB/Churchill. Will our child have time to do both these things while at the magnet program? I am aware that it is feasible in Churchill...

How is he in NTGs as an 8th grader?

DP .. I do know of one IB student who swims for RMSC.

If your goal is top college, go to regular school. It will be easier to get excellent grades and with excellent SAT scores and as a recruit should have a good shot anywhere.

The problem with IB is a 1500 SAT score is a yawn.

Yes. Many swim team members are also club swimmers and in the magnet program. You have to be highly organized with your time, but many kids are successful doing both.

I know a kid that did both. Do not know his grades but he is at a top college.

I think everyone will tell you it depends on your kid. Does work take him a long time? Does he procrastinate a lot? What are his goals? Is he going to be hooked for college based on swimming or does he need the near-perfect GPA for Harvard? And so on...

I would go to the school closest to my home. I couldn't stand the commute and wouldn't want my kid going through that.

Yes - regional magnets. All the schools already have an IB program, but now they will be open to students in other schools in their region. (RM will remain a county-wide magnet for next year's 8th graders, at least.)

In 2020-21 at Watkins Mill, Kennedy, and Springbrook. The region's each will serve haven't been announced yet. So this coming year's 8th graders will be able to apply for those programs.
