And no one is stopping the OP from getting different perspectives on how to treat families overseas. I have friends who make six figures but live in tiny studio apartments to save $ to send back home. It's a culture thing.

+1 In olden times, people weren't so individualistic. In poorer countries, people are still family oriented.

Not sure just how sarcastic you are being but the answer is no. While these countries are high crime areas there are plenty of safe places and things don't just get confiscated. Plenty of people live in peace.

Not true. My mom has sent many boxes over the years full of things and it has never been confiscated. My mom is from the southern region by the coast and it’s not dangerous Compared to other places

The reason I don’t want to do it is because once you do it once they expect you to keep doing it every single time they ask. Like many posters said before, they begin to see you as an ATM.

Because my mom always would send money to my grandparents. They then passed away and mom kept sending money to help out my aunt and uncle. My cousins always ask her for money for shoes, clothes, phones etc. When we went last year my mom sent TWO HUGE BOXES full of clothes, kitchen things etc and they just keep asking for money all the time. My mom doesn’t e en have health insurance or anything for her future. So keeps investing in my cousins who are just lazy.

How much did they ask? I make about $2000 a month and have for ca 20 years. I gave $500 from tax refund to a stranger back at home who needed money. I got nothing out of it other than this money went little further this way.
$100 should be big help in Guatemala and I would do it every once in awhile.
