He did not want to give any appearance of impropriety. He did not want to have to defend himself against false allegations from his competition. He did not want to have to defend himself from rumors that might be started. It is THAT simple.

If a guy doesn’t want to give any appearance of impropriety, don’t treat women different than you treat men. Don’t comment on a woman’s appearance. Don’t imply she’s less of a professional just because she’s in possessor a uterus and a vagina. Don’t caress her. Don’t give hugs. Don’t make gross sex jokes. Don’t sexually harass her. Don’t sexually assault her. See? This is easy, and it’s 100% within a man’s control.
That he needs to have women chaperoned in his presence doesn’t say he’s careful, it suggests he ought to locked up in a sex offender’s unit in prison. He’s admitting he can’t control himself.
If he treated her like a man, you would say he is misogynistic. Men do not have the same privilege as women do. People make comments on a man’s appearance, the way he dresses, you can hug a man without asking, etc, etc. Everything is fair game with a man. In this case, the chaperone is there to protect his reputation. He does not feel comfortable being a lone with this woman. She showed she does not care about how he feels. She wants to force him to comply with her demands. If the genders were reserved I could only image what you would say. She kind of showed she can not be trusted by the way she handled this story.
