I personally don't like Jonah. Find another name.

I don’t see why on earth everyone is being so mean. While I do have the opinion that you can’t claim a name beforehand, at this point this first kiddo is already born and named. The expectant couple can’t find something else not so similar? There are a lot of names out there. I’d be pissed off too.

Have you never met an Italian family? there are always six Joeys.

This is no big deal.

I’ve never heard of a boy called JoJo; I’ve only known girls with that nickname.

YOU are the one with the unreasonable stance. If you call your kid Joey or Jojo, there was no reason to throw a hissy fit that the new baby would be Jonah. But since you staked an unreasonable claim on Jonah, you don’t get to be upset. I mean, you will be, clearly, because you are nuts. But there was never anything wrong with two cousins being Jonah and there’s nothing wrong with two Joey cousins, either. There IS something weird about you staking claims on names and nicknames that aren’t even proper nicknames, but wev. Universal concensus is you are way out of line.

My cousins and I have the same first name with different middle names. Our first name Is our grandmother’s name. We thought (when we were little) it was a cool unique thing and it bonded us, like we shared a little family specialty. For some reason no one got confused, I suppose our parents used first and middle names, especially when they were mad!

You could choose to look at this situation positively, is all I’m saying.

Trying to control your kid's nickname is a fruitless task. My mother called me by a diminutive nickname for years. Think "Katie" for Katherine. It never stuck. I'm "Kate" or "Katherine" to everyone who knows me. Now, including her.

Either stick with the name you’ve been obsessed with since kindergarten or get over yourself. You’ve basically tried to stake claim to like 5 names. You sound nuts.

Dude, no one is saying you have to change it, just that it’s an option if you’re going to have such fits over this. You’re the one with a problem, not them, so any solution will have to come from you.

I named my kid Jonah instead of Joseph because I don't like the nicknames! I thought Jonah would be able to go by his full name, and nobody has tried to shorten it, but insisting nobody call a Joseph Joe would be weird. I'd say you got the first choice name, SIL can have the nicknames, who cares.

But I also think "calling" names and expecting no one else to use them is ridiculous. You can't hypothetically name kids who don't exist and expect other people to not name their *existing* children that. One of my brothers, who is single with no kids on the horizon, actually gave me the silent treatment when I was pregnant for saying I was considering our grandfather's name and wouldn't talk to me until I promised not to use it. Pregnant with kid 2 now and I'm still pissed - he was my grandfather, too!

I feel like I’m the SIL in this. The cousins name had my dream nickname associated with it. I dreamed of it since I was a kid. Think Katherine nn Kate and my grandma was named that. SIL threw a huge fit and I chose another name I hate. I wanted to call my dd another nn and she’s never used Kate. Biggest regret of my life and I still think of it often and it upsets me. For a while after giving birth I cried daily.
