This. To a tee.
Well, though, I always thought these types end up in power positions in their life, but this person actively seeks to not get out of her comfort zone.
Her position of power may well be through controlling and manipulating her family.
This is correct. They don’t have to be lawyers/senators/surgeons. Their fiefdom of manipulative terror can be their neighborhood block, their family, their church bible study, the PTA, etc. Ask me how I know, sigh.
Ok, this makes sense. So, how to deal? ...no matter what boundary or distance we set up, she finds a way to go around. It's very anxiety producing. And it's all the time. I actively avoid getting into anything with her...just refuse to, but that stokes the fire even more.
My soulution is just to avoid every possible interaction with people like this, in this case, severely limiting our interactions with my husband’s side of the family. There is no fixing the head cases, the only strategy to mitigate is to avoid.

You can play Narc Bingo where you get points for everytime they can't admit they are wrong, every time they play the victim, inflate their own knowledge etc.
My Narc mom explains medicine to me despite having not taken biology since before they understood what viruses were. I'm a doctor. Sometimes I play along with her bull to see how deep she can dig the hole.
Dont let them work you.
Lol! We do a drinking game! So, yes!
Ok, you are a doctor and she assumes that she knows more about whatever medicine? That's amazing...what do you do?
I used to try to point out my credentials. She just got huffy and then pouted. She also has an inferiority complex as the one person in the family without an advanced degree.
Now I just grey rock and give my DH "the look"and we make jokes about it later. Sometimes I try to get her to talk more so she looks more like an ass but that gets old.
Yes, this is it...knows everything and it's rooted in a lack of confidence. But, it's harder because it is your Mom, and you do probably love her, NPD and all. You probably have figured a lot out over time. With me, if I never have to see this relative again, I would be OK with that. I don't wish her harm, but could she just move away?
