Please, go volunteer in a school for just a few days and see what every teacher goes through. You will realize that that summer break is very needed and very well-earned!
My god. Teacher have demanding jobs. Many people do. They don't get paid a ton. Many other nonprofit or mission driven occupations do not either. During the school year, it's hard to take time off. Same with other occupations, although it's harder for teachers. They have to deal with kids and parents and administrators. Other occupations have complicated client relations. Some coach. Other occupations have similar non-essential duties tasks that are intense.
Teachers get paid 9 months of the year, or they spread out their paychecks.
They do not have to work during the summers and have many other vacations.That is a big big deal.
No, no, you just don't UNDERSTAND. No one has it as rough as teachers. No one else deals with challenging and difficult people all day every day or has trouble taking time off without hoop-jumping or has to work into the evenings without OT pay or gets paid less than they think they are worth. NO ONE! And certainly none of those people has to work that difficult, demanding, underpaid, overworked job 250+ days out of the year with a crappy two weeks of PTO and a handful of holidays that may or may not be paid.

Just wanted to clarify something. The summer/spring break/winter break is not vacation time. We are not paid for those days. Memorial day? Not paid. Labor day? Not paid. You probably get a few paid holidays right? Our pay is divided to give equal paychecks during the year but those days are not contract days so we do not get paid. Hence, not vacation.
Public school teacher and now principal--almost 30 years total--here. Come on, PP. Yes, it is vacation in the eyes of the world, including educators. You're not working and can enjoy the time as you please. Please stop with quibbling with semantics. It's not a good look.
+1. This argument is just dumb. Teachers are not hourly wage workers. They get paid an annual salary and enjoy benefits year round. Days off from teaching are just that: days off. They are not days unemployed.

I am envious of the summers off but when I think about the other 9.5 months of the year, I much prefer my job where I can telework, move my hours around if need be, have the ability to take a long lunch with colleagues and not have to plan a full day's worth of work if I want to take a day off. I wouldn't give up the flexibility and the autonomy that I have in my job to be a teacher. They get so few breaks in the day and when they do get a moment to breathe, they are eating at lightning speed, responding to e-mails, grading papers, making copies. I could never do what they do.
