I have a DS, and I get the sense that there are a lot of people that prefer girls at this point. It's tied up in the fashionable prejudices that you see all the time right now. Just take a look at some of the posts in these threads deriding boys and men as dangerous and little girls as well-behaved and more likely to succeed in school. People (mostly who don't have kids) have told me point blank that they think girls are better, although none of them knew I had a DS at the time.

It's sad that people have allowed themselves to become so blinded by all of this gender theory stuff (most of which is garbage) that they go around harboring actual prejudice against boys based on nothing more than gender.

I wanted a girl because the potential to continue a friendlike relationship into adulthood (shopping, going to the movies etc) exists. A boy/man is gone once he finds a wife.

We have two boys and a girl, all of whom we adore. However, things didn't go according to our expectations. My husband thought he wanted boys, but our daughter is clearly the apple of his eye. I thought I wanted a daughter, but ended up having far more in common with my sons in terms of personality and interests.

1st pp here. I'm an engineer with a masters degree. What's wrong with bows and dresses? Feminine things are not less than male things, nor do they have anything to do with intelligence or STEM. Just because my daughter likes baby dolls doesn't mean she's destined for the typical female jobs and my son will be a scientist because he likes trains. My son hasn't even been around little boys (he's the only boy in daycare) and he just love everything trucks, trains and balls. It boggles my mind. I haven't reinforced anything. I have a playroom filled with trains, trucks, dolls, kitchens, puzzles and books.

I have two boys but I do think moms prefer a girl. I think its some mix of shared identity, thinking little girls are easier, better behaved. I do think grandparents prefer boys so maybe its a generational thing also.

The perspective is very different in the coastal U.S.. Girls do better in school, behave better, and are less likely to have ADHD or autism.

I don’t have money and I’ve always wanted girls. Seems to be the norm for those from western cultures.

I think women want a girl to share things about their identity. Which is female. But less gender normed than the male counterpart. I wanted to do my daughter’s hair, buy pretty dresses, and share makeup tips, but also teach soccer, chess, advanced math, participate in scouts, and go camping and fishing. Then there’s growing up and going out to lunch and shopping. Gossip. I can do all that with a girl. Can’t with a boy.

Except, I didn’t grow up poor. Why would you think that?

NP here, and I worked/lived in Eastern Europe for 8 years. Even today, the "normal" Eastern European family is very, very poor compared to middle class America, and even more so during the Soviet era (when you were growing up).

But even so, I knew a lot of Eastern European moms who wanted girls. Maybe you are a little bit older than today's young moms, or maybe you have been out of Eastern Europe for a long time.
