Hmm, DD just graduated with dual degrees from UIUC. Most people on campus and at college confidential call it that, although the school admin hate the term because they want the entire six schools in the system to be referenced as Illinois without the flagship superiority overshadowing the other schools. Yes, we paid full price. Yes, it was worth it. Amazing opportunities for research. DD worked with a post doc at NCSA. Interned for DOE and NASA and now headed to grad school. It’s a great school, especially so in CS.

Eh. I live in Illinois and UIUC is a perfectly fine school. The problem for in-staters is that it is not cheap. UIUC costs as much in-state as California schools do OOS. Same for Texas and Florida. There's not much financial incentive for kids to stay in-state at UIUC.

From PGH and people do refer to it as CMU. Also, people tend to pronounce it incorrectly bc of how Carnegie Hall is pronounced (Carn-ah-gie). It’s Car-NAY-gie, however.

Great school and PGH is a lot nicer now than when I was growing up and living there.

University of Illinois, or U of I as my friends who are alumni all called it, also has a fantastic architecture program. I know it was top ranked at one time - not sure if that's still true but I know lots of architects who graduated from there and have had successful careers.

I also have friends who went there for a variety of other majors, and all seemed to enjoy it. Yes, it is large and can be a party school if that's what you're looking for. But it also has a great reputation in a number of majors.

UIUC is very strong at CS. But it's still not worth full out-of-state price. UMD, VT, GMU, WM and UVA provide almost as good a CS education and many internship opportunities.

Obviously if you can get in MIT, CMU, UCB and Stanford for CS, you should go.

Also top in library sciences and agricultural research. It is at the top for several graduate programs, including the medical school as the largest in the US. The Chicago site of UI med school has the most medical students, and the U-C site has the research unit with combined degree program.

For what it's worth, I was there for 8 years, and we typically referred to it as UIUC. I bet this differed by program.
