OP Here, newsflash, 90 % of the time, when a beepaholic rushes past me after yelling, beeping, swerving to speed to the next stop sign or light.... my car catches up to them.. all while driving the speed limit and safely.

For all that yelling and beeping and stressing, the beepaholics usually don't get very far ahead.

Sometimes they are caught by the same red traffic lights as you. Sometimes they are not. You tend to notice the former (there they are!), but for the latter, often you don't know if they got ahead, or turned the corner, or what have you.

I drive the speed limit, but in my area (not DC) there are a lot of people who take speed bumps excessively slow (not at a creep, but actually come to a standstill), turn corners excessively slow, etc. Many times I've passed them safely and then just gone through as the last car through a traffic light. Many times I've been stopped at the same light. Both happen. It doesn't matter.

You are wrong. Safe drivers just don't stick out like an agressive one. Also, you are either a safe or unsafe driver, it shouldn't work on a spectrum. There's no such thing as "overly safe" The "overly" implies that the driver is actually unsafe if you think about it--e.g., driving way too slow on the highway where it's actually dangerous.

You lose the moral high ground when you go beyond what you are supposed to do (follow speed limit, obey laws) and do other things that make the situation more unsafe (slow down more than required, knowing it is likely to result in more unsafe driving by others).

Driving the speed limit and following the rules = trying to be safe

Slowing down MORE than that with the intent to provoke more anger (and/or knowing you will, and doing it anyway) = unsafe driving, making the situation worse deliberately, because you value doing it more than being safe

You’re doing the right thing OP. Keep on ignoring the raging drivers. If you slow down slightly after they throw temper tantrums because you are following the law, I don’t see the problem with you making your own quiet point.

Np. I moved from NYC to DC to Portland. When I got to Portland it blew my mind how civil drivers are there. People generally drive the speed limit and pay real attention to stop signs. If they think the speed limit isn’t fast enough on a street with a 20 mph or 25 mph limit, they don’t honk they just try to pass you but even that is pretty rare. I think everyone is safer because of it.

6-10 seconds at a stop sign is not remotely the rule and that is improper driving on your part. That's no different than driving 30 in a 50 zone.
