We went and continue to be excited for the Fall. I didn't ask any specific questions about the concerns raised on this thread, but some of the parents asked similar. They are still figuring things out, so the people we talked to were cautious to commit to anything. But the upbeat philosophy and attitude toward the school, community and education really came through. That's enough for us at this point. We really got the sense they are working hard to make the new school as special as P street is.

We've had great teachers, but the disruption and classroom management are still suboptimal, as is the communication. At a minimum, would strive for consistency, and for there to be the supports required for all students to learn in both languages.

What kind of disruption and classroom management? Just trying to understand the breadth of the issues to figure out if my sort of nervous kid would have issues.

I'm a different parent of a current mid elementary student and pk. I have not personally seen disruption and problems with classroom management in our four years at the school, but I have heard about problems from parents with older children. I think the problem teachers are no longer at the school. I will contend that aftercare classroom management is mixed (some great, some not so much), but the main school day experience my kids have had has been wonderful. I have one outgoing kid and one painfully shy one, and their teachers have been sensitive to their needs.

People asking questions, I hope you get to meet with real families. Don't base your decisions on dcum where a few vocal posters can slant the perception of a school dramatically (and that can be both positive and negative slants)!

The email was for admitted families so I assume the information in the email was intended for admitted families. I also emailed admissions with a simple question and received no response.

Why would you say it’s obvious better match than DCPS? Which DCPS are you referring to? You can’t be referring to alone DCPS? Not even all language DCPS. MV is def not better than Bancroft, Marie Reed, Powell, Oyster, Tyler, and some others. MV is a hot mess and most people that attend know it to be true. What measure are you using to say that? Waitlist length?

This person clearly fell for the hype. You should hear the way people in my neighborhood (Bloomingdale) talk about MV -- people who have never attended. its cultish and very inaccurate.

We live in Bloomingdale (Ledroit actually) and have been at MV for four years now and I have to say that this year has been the best yet. It feels like the school has settled into a nice groove (at least in our grade). Is it perfect? No but as long as they keep getting good teachers (which we've had almost without exception) I'd recommend it to anyone. Do we worry about the new campus draining energy and attention from P Street? A little maybe but it hasn't been an issue this year.

What would you say are the drawbacks? Do you plan to attend DCI?

For now DCI is the plan, but we're going to start worrying about that after this school year is over.

As far as drawbacks go there are really aren't too many as far as I'm concerned. Communication from the school is much better this year than in years previous. Haven't had any major discipline issues (at least that I'm aware of). Last years expansion battles sapped some of the rah rah spirit from the community but that seems to be healing.

Thanks PP. Approximately what grade is your child in? We matched for 1st but undecided whether to just move to a Wilson feeder instead. Do you feel like the quality of teaching is good, and how is the math and science?

4th Grader who is naturally good at math (and science) so its working well for us. Whether a kid with less math aptitude would do well there I don't know, I think so.
