Industrial? I'm pretty sure you were at the wrong campus. GMU is surrounded by downtown Fairfax, which is cute and getting some decent restaurants, bars, etc. in it (finally), parks, residential neighborhoods, and malls that cater to college kids. It's walkable and they've been doing a lot to try to upgrade its "curb appeal." So, try again.

The “Ugliest Campus Ever” lists exist. GMU has never made such a list as far as I’m aware.
I’ve been to the campus many many times and yes, there’s been tons of construction but that’s a good thing, and doesn’t make it “industrial.” WTH?

I live not far from GMU and have no affiliation with the school. The traffic isn't that bad. I commute right past it at peak traffic. Is their traffic? Yes. But, it's less than some other areas in the DMV. Plus they are increasing buses, bike lanes, etc.

And it's really not dead on the weekends anymore. The city has put in some new breweries (Chubby Squirrel, Ornery, High Side), there are old standbys like Auld Shabeen, and some other decent restaurants. We were just out in the "city" a few weeks ago and all of these places were packed. If you mean no dance places as the equivalent of "dead", you may be right. But that isn't my scene these days.

Really? Is it just HM? DD applied to Scripps and they are listed as one of the top scenic colleges and nicest dorms. We haven’t been out yet, but if she gets in we will visit. Virtual tour looked nice.


Scripps is flat-out gorgeous. Same for Pomona. From there it’s Claremont McKenna and then Pitzer. HM bringing up the rear and it isn’t even close.

Actually the tech and cyber focus is only about 15 years old.
