There are virtually no spanish speakers around ATS. And then you still need to find a site for ATS.

ATS is not a good site for Immersion because it needs to grow and ATS is a tiny school. Unless they are actually going to create 3 immersion ES.
What does make sense is ATS becomes a neighborhood school and Barrett becomes Immersion. There is a spanish speaking population near here.

This is just another example of Arlington community member's rationale to fit what they want.
Barrett is significantly more walkable than ATS. If a lot of walkers don't want immersion, you'll be busing them to ATS.
Immersion does not "need" to grow - it "wants" to grow. Don't give me the waitlist argument as proof it needs to grow. Get rid of 60-80% FRL neighborhood schools, and you won't "need" immersion to grow.

Call it whatever you'd like but it is not a good site for immersion. hello, please look at demographics https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Spanish-at-Home-by-PU-wBoundaries.pdf and ding, ding BARRETT

1) Housing

.....

11) Make Claremont neighborhood.

If anyone can fill in #1-10 with other than "housing" LMK. This is the best I've been able to come up with.

I think that horse has been beaten and yes agree that solves things but APS is not any position to control that and the County doesn't care about school problems. That's long been the case.

Plenty of "spanish-speakers" nearby in Buckingham.
How about a place of eternal rest for ATS.

They aren't creating a third immersion ES anytime soon. The system doesn't have the capacity for it. To the extent they expand the immersion program beyond its two home schools, it will be putting a limited number of classes into what is otherwise a neighborhood school with excess capacity.

I wouldn't be so sure of that but we'll see how it all plays out.

There's no waitlist for spanish-speaking students at either school, the only excess demand is from non-spanish speaking families. They'd have to revamp the program to accommodate any further expansion.

And apparently he and the APS staff gave the school board a memo on why the swap was such a no-brainer and the school board wrote questions asking for clarifications before it was all announced? Was there not a similar process or heads up this time? I can't believe no one, especially the school board, was like, hey wait, didn't we just do a whole big thing on this a few months ago? Of are we just supposed to act like that meeting in August didn't happen?

I know the projection numbers went up slightly but that can't be a surprise to anyone-- if they are going to say, well the projections changed since August, doesn't that mean they can just keep flip-flopping every time the projections change? Why make such an early announcement about the swap if they knew they were going to have to walk it back when the projections came out? Obviously, having ASFS sit outside its boundaries isn't that big of a deal (unless, of course, you live near the school and wanted to go there before they do the North Arlignton boundary changes).

Given how much of the criticism of APS in the past has been for their decisions to stay the course on something rather than adapt more quickly to changing conditions, I think attacking them now for being too responsive to changing conditions is a bit ridiculous.

Oh, please. It had nothing to do with projections and quickly adapting to changing conditions. There was too much angst in the community and (some legitimate) unanswered questions regarding how it all played out in regard to timing and upcoming boundary changes. If they weren't hearing complaints from the community, there would have been no "adapting" to changing conditions.

It’s a HUGE lot though so easy to expand in future and obviously trailers are solid option.
