Yur daughter will have to pass a test in order to start early. I have had friends had their kids, born on October 2 so just missing the cut off, whose kid couldn’t pass the test at a high enough level to be allowed to start kidnergarten. So if you want them two years apart, yu might want to start your son late.

I dont understand your last point. Why does it matter they are only two grades apart? What difference is if it is three or two?

Dont short change your daughter.

They'll be in same schools together longer, activities will be somewhat closer age wise, less daycare cost, etc. She's two now and I have no concerns with her.development thus far that would indicate to me that she won't be ready to start on time. She's extremely independent, speaks wells, no delays or concerns. Not everyone wants to delay every aspect of their children's lives.

There are some 5 year olds who are not ready to start Kindergarten. They struggle with focus and attention and are simply not ready to be in school. I had a friend who started his five year old this year and they decided to pull his child because he wasn’t ready. There was a conversation with the teacher and the parents knew that their son wasn’t happy at school yet. The extra year can help a lot of kids emtionally and physically mature enough to be at school.

The law says that you have to enroll your child in school at the age of 6, that can be kindergarten or first grade or home school or parochial school or public school.

I have a good number of friends who have kids birthdays in September and October who choose to hold their child back after consulting with pre school teachers. I know people who waited a year because their child was struggling with speech.

People should be making decisions based on what they feel is best for their kid.

You honestly don't understand that different kids are different? Really?

I have DD with a mid June bday. We are in Moco public schools. She is now in 1st grade and doing just fine. I was worried about her being the youngest before she started K but we have had no problems. She was the 2nd youngest in her K class I have no idea who else has summer birthdays in her 1st grade class because the birthdays arent posted on the wall like they were in K.

We have a DD with a late June birthday.

In our experience, the first half of the year through 3rd or 4th grade was difficult. We got a lot of e-mails about behavior, self-regulation, etc. Academically, she was actually above grade level and is in AAP (where the complaints seemed to die down slowly...for example this year, we only had a rough Sept. in 4th grade).

The kids in DD's class were definitely older and there were many, many kids with summer birthdays and fall birthdays who were much older than DD. These kids exhibited more self-control than mine and we've had teachers all slowly realize (usually by mid-year) that DD's issues were developmental more than anything.

I do think it's important to keep age based development in mind when you are thinking through the choice.

I did not hold back my June DS or August DD back.

My kids are June and July bdays. Neither were held back. They went to great pre-schools and the teacher at their pre-school had decades of experience. She said they were ready, and our instinct was that they were ready. Neither of my kids were the youngest in their grades.

In k through grade 2, there were times when I could tell that my kid didn't have the same maturity as some of the older kids. What I mean is, a 9 month age difference is noticeable in the lower grades. But by grade 3, everyone is caught up. That has been my experience anyway.

I have no regrets about sending them on time. Every case is different though.

My 4 year old has a June birthday, and we will most likely wait another year to send him to kindergarten. He is fine academically. He can read, add, subtract, etc. However, he is just really young for his age. He still naps in the afternoons. When he is sad or angry, he cries big tears, and he struggles sitting still for long. I talked to his preschool teacher, and she doesn’t think he is ready to start. I will probably still send him to the kindergarten assessment, but my guess is that they will recommend we wait another year.

I really depends on the kid. I did not hold back my late-June DS. My sister did hold back her DS with a May birthday.

I will say, we didn't have any concerns when DS was starting K -- he was very confident and social, already reading and doing math well above grade level. However, from the beginning struggled with impulse control and classroom behavior. In discussing his issues with the school counselor in 3rd grade I said then that maybe we should have held him back but she emphatically said it was right to start him when we did, that if we'd waited he'd still be having issues but out of boredom rather than immaturity and boredom is much harder to deal with. By 5th grade, he'd grown up more and classroom behavior wasn't an issue.

My nephew was definitely more immature before K and in their area was going into a half-day K with very large classes so it made sense for him to wait. He's done well in school too. There's no right answer for all kids.
