There's an article in the latest Atlantic where the author argues that online dating can bring out the worst in people because there are no mutual friends, family or coworkers that people have in common. If this guy, was your best friend's coworker, or a colleague's brother, for example, it's unlikely he would engage in such shi*tty behavior.
