That's what this is. No reasonable person really expects their child's high school to reach out to THEM for feedback on whether and where to put a fence on school property.
The person we're responding to is either a mean-spirited person trying to rile people up, or an actual Russian Troll who found facebook and twitter too boring now that the election is over, and so they have now targeted DCUM!

I am sure they considered these problems for a few seconds but correctly found them completely ridiculous.
The fence has cut down on students crossing Gainsborough away from the crosswalk (especially students dropped off/picked up by cars away from the crosswalk), and made things a bit safer for pedestrians around Churchill. It hasn't solved all the traffic problems, or the drug problems at Churchill, and neither has it brought peace to the Middle East.
But go ahead and continue your obsession with the fence. Maybe we can keep this thread going for another 6 months.
That's not pedestrian safety, it's just pedestrian removal.
+1 Children should be taught to use crosswalks and to not be looking down at their phones when crossing the street. Teaching and getting community involvement would have been more effective in changing behavior habits than building a fence. I agree in an emergency situation when the building needs to be evacuated quickly, the fence could be a saftey impediment.
Official crossing guards or police officers also help with pedestrian and traffic safety. Why doesn't Churchill have crossing guards?
Drivers should be taught to stop for pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. It's the law! And every intersection is a crosswalk - so, at minimum, there are crosswalks across Gainsborough at Victory Lane (unmarked), and Georgetowne Drive (one marked, one unmarked). But the parking lot entrances/exits are likely legal crosswalks also.
Everywhere else, it's legal for pedestrians to cross, it's just that the drivers have the right-of-way.

Pedestrian safety is important, but the fence creates other problems. Did anyone consider how that fence would impede emergency vehicles in the event of a fire or police emergency? Did they consider that it could prevent students from leaving and turn them into sitting ducks in an active shooter situation?

So said Ms. Heckert when people started complaining!

Dr. Benz was barely aware that the school day actually started at 7:40. I doubt she had any input on anything related to school safety or the issues with the traffic. She had 20 years to figure something out and never got around to it.

This is what made me laugh. She actually looks very similar to Mrs. Heckert.
With all the problems in the school, the top of Mrs. Heckert's to do list is to build a fence?![]()
