So the GOP won’t do anything about it because the Ds are trying to get more votes? Is that your logic?

This made me think of how it used to be with digital music. Music companies wanted you to buy the whole album for $16, so they made it real tough to download music. When Apple and the music companies finally came up with a system where you could buy individual songs for $1 or $2, piracy dropped dramatically. You don't have to open the borders any more than you have to make music free. But you have to make the system reasonable.

Plenty of people already wait 15+ years to enter legally: the brothers and sisters who are sponsored by their US citizen siblings.

Spouses of green card holders have to wait THREE YEARS to join their husbands and wives. Yet someone can storm the border and insist on their right to stay right now.

So we should fix the three year wait for spouses of green card holders, yes?

It's 3 years to suss out FRAUDULENT marriages and permanent residency.

Unlike mob rushing the Mexico/U.S. border and getting "vetted" in a couple of 20 minute translator conversations, 5 minute doctor appt, and zero ID or homeland paperwork. All while getting put up on gov't dime for days or weeks. No fraud here, right folks!?!

No you idiot, stop lying. Three years is the wait until visa number becomes available. All background and fraud checks come AFTER that. It's three years just in waiting until you can file your application.

The level of ignorance about your own immigration laws here is astounding.

Why isn’t gop pushing this if it’s such a hot topic for its base?

Because the people with the money don't want it. The GOP care more about their donors than they do their base. One of Trump's first acts in office was to commute the sentence of a guy convicted of fraud related to the hiring of illegals in his factory. The guy broke child labor laws, hired illegals and abused them, committed financial fraud, but Trump commuted his sentence. It's a better show to go after the illegals themselves than reduce the demand for their labor by taking a hard line on employers. The employers have money, the illegals don't.

Why aren’t the Trump supporters on here pushing it with their representatives if it’s such a burning issue for them?

Wrong. Schooling is not reserved for citizens.

Rep. Steve King of Iowa, one of the most rabidly anti-immigrant lawmakers in the country, represents a district where employers' use of illegal immigrants is rampant. In his case, it's very much about demonizing brown people and not about ensuring that white, rural employers abide by the law.

lol. you really think it only takes those people 20min to become legal?

catch and release? absolutely. Most have zero paperwork, photos, communication proof of anything. They even lie about their age, name, children, etc. Anything goes, just show up with nothing but your story.

1. that doesn't make them legal in 20min
2. So ICE is releasing them? Whose fault is that? If you are referring to local law enforcement, well, 1. that's not their job, just as it's not ICE's job to give speeding tickets 2. many of the big metro areas don't have room in their jails to hold nonviolent illegal immigrants.

Is use of e-verify a condition of receiving agricultural subsidies? If not, that would seem like a good approach.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. Thanks, always interesting to hear different viewpoints. This issue is so contentious that it is difficult to have rational conversations with people. I think we absolutely need to change the quotas and make them more reasonable but fundamentally that still doesn't entitle people to break the law and come here illegally. It just seems so unfair to all the immigrants that followed the proper procedures. My cousin's wife waited for years to join her husband here. So many similar stories about people waiting patiently for years.

Life is unfair on both sides -- unfair quotas on one side and unfair waiting on the other.

As you say, the system is broken.

I am an immigrant as is my spouse.
