fwiw, I did a quick search on hives. There were quite a few more hives reports from the seasonal than h1n1 (more than 3:1) but it was a rough search and I need to refine it more to get a more accurate result.

Use 'Uticaria' for 'hives'. If the bumps are under the skin not on top you can search for Angioedema which is similar

Did you find out anything more with your search? This seems like a lot of peopel responding here, but I can't tell (obviously).

My son doesn't have any known allergies. And 2 days after getting the H1N1 vaccine, he started getting hives all over his body. They come and go but it's been just over a week and he still has them. In addition to the hives he also came down with a very high fever and a headache that lasted about 36 hours. I wasn't sure if either of these symptoms were a reaction to the shot but the more I talk to people the more I think it definitely is.

Our Ped said to bring him in next week. They will try to rule out any other potential allergies first.

so all of you people who had kids with hives (which clearly sounds like a side effect in this case) what does the pediatrician say? Are they concerned? Is this considered a mild reaction? do they recommend the second dose? I'm unclear on whether or not hives are a big deal in this situation. Obviously they are not life threatening, just curious as to what the deal is...

Allergic reactions happen pretty much right away. I think you should look into any foods she ate in the hours prior to the hives.

This is not always true with my daughter they happen the next day not the day of the shot. She gets localized hives from any and all shots that last 1-2 weeks and they never come on right after the shot it is the next day usually about 12-24 hours later and she is 3 and it only happens when she get shots and it is where she gets the shot....so very confident it is from the shots and she is not allergic to eggs or anything else.

My daughter, 3, gets hives at the injection site after every shot she has every recieved. She has no allergies to food or anything else we have found but shots. The hives do not spread over her entire body. The hives appear the next day after the shots and last 1-2 weeks, but they are localized at the injection site...when in her leg the hives spread from the top of her thigh to the knee and when in her arm from the shoulder to the elobow.

The dr says it is not hives and can't tell me what they are just a reaction but my mom is allergic to the sun and gets hives from it all the time (she knows what they look like)...these looked like my mom's hives only on my daughter. My daughter also itched them to the point of bleeding because they were so itchy. I think they are hives!

I was on the fence about the H1N1 vaccine/nasal spray and from hearing all the hives stories I think we will not get her the shot. I am worried about the nasal spray because what if this creates breathing problems? Thanks for the help!

I wanted to chime in that if an allergic reaction they would be right away, not days later.

Just wanted to say that the above is not necessarily true. My DS is allergic to penicillin (horrible hives that last up to 3 weeks). The first time he got the hives, it was three days AFTER finishing his round of antibiotic. Subsequently, he has been tested, and it is indeed the penicillin he is allergic to. Hives are weird, and usually it's hard to tell what they are from, why, or how long they are going to last. It is kind of scary.

My 3yo son had his H1N1 shot a week ago. He developed hives 2 days ago in the groin area at first and spread all over his body in 24 hours despite my giving him benadryl. Ive gone to the ER and a walk-in clinic only to be told in both occasions that 95% of the time, one cannot determine the cause of hives when it breaks out. I am not sure if my son's hives has anything to do w the vaccine, but it's something to be looked into after reading this thread. I am very concerned. He's not had any skin conditions since birth, and this is v alarming.

Just wanted to add my DS who is 14 months got hives this evening and received the thirmesol free H1N1 shot this morning. They seemed pretty mild were only on his upper back and upper chest and cleared in about 20 minutes. I gave him benadryl anyways. His Ped said to bring him in if he has them in the AM and to we should likely NOT give him the 2nd dose. Just wondering how long it took for others to have their childrens hives completely clear up?

My daughter got hives after her first nasal of H1N1 and I did not relate it to the vaccine. Went to a dematologist and it resolved after treatment. Got her second H1N1 and hives are back in full force. Now I am sure it is the vaccine. She has tested positive for egg allergy as a baby. I think it may be the egg allergy but am more concerned about the leg pain. Submitted to Vaers website just now. Make sure you are submitting if your child has a rash or complains of leg pain.
