It doesn't make sense because if your number is good enough to get into SWS, it would be good enough to get into Maury. So if you list Maury 1st and get #1 in the lottery, then you'll get Maury, not SWS. Conversely if your number is high enough for Maury but not high enough for SWS, you don't harm anything by listing Maury #2. Just do what they tell you: list in order of your actual preference.

That makes sense if Maury is your absolute first choice.


It is because it's so close to home and community is important to us. I'm going to an SWS open house just to be sure I don't love it tons more. But at this point I'm assuming that anywhere my kid gets in, he will leave to go to Maury for K.

The only harm is that they take up spots on your list that could be filled with realistic options. But it looks like you may not even have a full list of 12, so no harm at all. Just have realistic expectations.

you plan to walk? What will you do if you don’t get anything?


OP said if she didn't get into something close / walkable she'd continue with daycare / private options. Not everyone is desperate for free PK3.

Zero percent chance of getting into JO as well, I’d bet. I don’t think they admitted any OOB kids for PK3 this year.

There is a very useful video on myschooldc website that explains this. People have stated this but it was among other tidbits: remember if you get into a school ALL schools below it drop off your list.

Peabody is pointless to list. You can put it on there (if you’re not listing 12 schools) but you have a 0% chance of getting in.

Not the PP but want to say that as a family currently at a school that isn't our IB but that we are happy with there is still a serious appeal to switch our child into our IB at K. Being at a school that is basically right outside our door and where all our neighborhood kids on our block attend for 6 years seems kind of seems like a no brainer, especially if it's an equal or "better" school.
