I loved the simplicity of my recent rental car. I think it was a Kia? It was like my car as a teenager. Simple controls for the a/c and wipers and such, not like my car now that tries to predict my every whim but somehow ends up coming up short. I was thinking I might even get one for myself after driving it.

I’m with you OP. I drive rental cars all the time for business, and base model Sentra, Corollas, Altimas, etc with cloth interior and hard plastic are the pits.
We spend a lot of our life in our vehicles. I have two vehicles with a total of 300k miles on them. Assuming an average of 20 mph (which includes waiting in the car while not moving), that means we have spent over 15,000 hours in those vehicles. Given that, we buy BMWs and Audis with nice interiors.

I have no desire for leather. Even if I was offered any car for free with any upgrades, I would demand non-leather.
And do I wish my 06 Altima was a little quieter? I guess, but it doesn't affect my quality of life. If I came into some money, the car would be last on the list of things I would upgrade. It's just not important to me.

Generally I put on my seatbelt and start the engine. Then I check my surroundings and pull out of my parking space. After that I drive wherever I want! Oh, Is that not what you meant?
I see no reason to spend a ton of money on a car I drive about 10 miles a week.

All I know is, when I leave DH I will probably have to trade my beloved luxury SUV for something cheap, in the $10k range. MAYBE a not-terribly-used Accord.
I'll miss that car. But it'll be worth it.

We have an Audi Q7 and just leased a VW Jetta as a second car. I love it!! I actually prefer driving the Jetta.

OP isn’t talking about people who can’t afford anything nicer. She’s referring to people like those on DCUM who brag about their thriftiness. I don’t get it either, OP. Life is nicer with some luxuries (as long as you can afford them and aren’t trading financial security for said luxuries.).

I don't car about cars. Nothing you describe is something that is worth the money to me. I grew up with luxury cars. My first car was a luxury car. DH drives a mid level luxury car. I just don't care. I wouldn't want to be friends with people like you who are going to judge me because of a car.
I care about other things like vacation. So the money I don't put to a high end car is used to go on high end vacations. Or clothes/bags. Or home improvements.
This is my exact car and it feels so fancy to me!
