OP here, I see this wasn't a very popular thread among most... I am not trying to spoil her at all, but she does well in school and makes good choices, and honestly, why not? I don't think buying her the car would spoil her, especially since DD 2 will get it right after she graduates high school. But what some PPs brought up about safety is something I will definitely look into. Are the Renegades or Grand Cherokees any safer? Really? I feel like its popular with teen boys and teen girls. I know 40 somethings who have them bc they loved them since being teens and treated themselves as adults!
I was in hs and college in late 90s, early 00s and I remember loving the guys with the jeeps!

Originally, I thought we’d give DS one of our cars and buy a new one for ourselves. But then I realized, as a PP mentioned, that we’d be giving him a car he would almost certainly have to downgrade from. Or worse, he would consider that car the minimum standard going forward and compromise his financial stability for a car he couldn’t afford when the time came for a new one.
So instead of giving him one of our cars or buying him one of the “cool” cars he desperately wanted, we bought a safe, low mileage used Volvo. He used to hate it, but now it has a name and he takes it through the car wash every weekend.

I can afford lots of things. This does not mean that my kids can. There is a good chance that my kids won't do as well as I did financially. And they better start learning it now...

I told my dd no jeep because it isn't in the highest-rated safety group. (It's second highest, which is not bad but I had a bad accident once and insist on nothing below the top safety grouping for all of us.)

I lived in an affluent neighbourhood when I was a teen. My friends had Porsche’s, corvettes etc. I had a car, but it was a beater. I didn’t give a shit when people made comments. My parents were going through a bitter divorce and didn’t have the money to get me something better. My parents taught me to be grateful for what I had.
Now that I have a daughter who will soon drive, there is no way I am buying her anything but a reliable beater. Her friends already have fancy cars, but I want her to be thankful that she has a car. We can afford a Jeep, but there is no way I will buy one for any of my kids as I am not raising spoiled brats.
