Non-catholic "cheap" schools in the area, for limited values of cheap.

Dominion Christian ~$16,000 lower, $19,000 upper school
Oak Hill Christian ~$15,000, sibling discount
Trinity Christian ~$16,000 lower, $20,000 upper school
Lorien Wood ~$12,000 with parental service, $14,000 - $15,000 lower/upper without.
Vienna Adventist ~$5000 SDA, $10,000 non-SDA. Sibling discounts.
Academy for Christian Education - $21,000 (K-2), $16,000 ( 3- 8), $24000 (9-12), sibling discount.
Way of Faith Christian - $8000 (K-3, I think?) didn't find tuition on website, but that's what an aggregator said.
Immanuel Christian - ~$14,000. sibling discount.

Although religiously affiliated, these schools are not considered parochial. They are independent schools because they are independently financed, rather than church supported.

While this may be true broadly speaking, it looks like Catholic schools are really the low-cost parochial schools (and, next to public, the lowest cost school category). For example, I'd think most would consider St. Albans and Sidwell to be parochial schools. According to its website, Sidwell is "a Quaker day school" and they give admission preference to students who are "members of the Religious Society of Friends." St. Albans is "an Episcopal school with a pastoral commitment to all" and the website describes how boys attend the campus's chapel "to worship, pray, and learn." Yes, both admit kids of all faiths (or none) but they also both have a clearly identified religious affiliation.

I looked up my parochial K-8 school in Southern California, near Orange County. I attended it all 9 years, as did my siblings. It's a very middle-class school with a strong focus on academics. They have full science and computer labs, plus plenty of outdoor play space and full gymnasium, music classes, and art classes. You do more specialized instruction after school. Classes are 25-28 kids, with two full classes for each grade level.

The majority of my peers went on to earn 4 year degrees from UC school system. I think we all did pretty solidly and based on social media most folks are leading solidly productive lives as upper middle class professionals.

Monthly tuition for 2018-2019:
One child: $720
Two children: $1250
Three children: $1625

It blows my mind how much more expensive East Coast private schools are. WHERE IS $40K PER YEAR GOING? WHY THE HELL DOES IT COST SO MUCH?

PP here. I should clarify that I know other families that prefer WIS. I also know families who’ve had kids at both. Really depends on the individual kid.
