Plenty of people use that nearby playground and witness the atrocious behavior.

Yes.

Speak with Realtors in the area zoned for JH. It has a real affect on prices. This has been going on for 17 years. It's not a new issue.

We have lived in Del Ray for 10 years and now have a child at MVCS. We talked to a lot of neighbors and went through a few years of the SOL test results based on demographics before deciding to go to MVCS. We decided that we liked the opportunity of the dual language program. While we can afford a private, we would rather not just yet and both my husband and I were public school kids who went on to a great private college. We love Del Ray and want to be part of the community. Both of us have decided that based on our demographics, it wasn't a bad deal to go to MVCS and it is fine so far. That being said, we are going to be carefully watching the SOL tests (demographic breakdowns) as they get released in the next years and are prepared to switch to a private at some point if necessary. MVCS does focus a lot more energy on the English language learners than the native English speakers, so we are worried about that.

So far, I really like MVCS and how well they work with the community. They have a very generous and active PTA, great staff, and are eager to help the students. I don't think, as a previous poster said, you can make generalized statements about good vs. bad. It may or may not work for your child.

Zoning to MCVS and JH are really two different ball games. I lived in the JH section for years and no, the streets were not teeming with school-age kids. Lots of 0-5. A smattering of older kids. I don't believe anyone said there are no kids in Del Ray. Yes, clearly that is absurd. I do know several families at MCVS who are very happy.

It makes sense to me. Why else would people be so eager to tell other people that their lived experiences are wrong, and so negatively?

There are people on here (and this is true across all the schools boards) literally responding to people who are saying that mvcs/jh/etc are working for them and saying that they are wrong and will regret it some day, without firsthand experience of the school in question.

OP, call up the school, explain your situation, and ask for a tour.

Actually there has not been a single response on this thread from someone claiming JH works for them. Reread the thread and you’ll see that the closest you get is the family with a toddler who they allegedly intend to send to JH in 3 years and claim it’s fine because “everyone” who has kids there is happy, despite the fact that they acknowledge all of the kids on their block go elsewhere.

Yes there are multiple people actually claiming to have kids at MVCS who have had good experiences but as many others have pointed out MVCS and JH are a completely different ballgame, despite what the parents of the 2 year old may try to tell themselves.

My very good friend has three kids in JH and has been very happy with it. Initially she had been zoned for JH and got a waiver for Maury but when her oldest was getting ready to enter 6th grade her family decided to switch back to JH so her oldest could go to middle school there vs GW. They’ve been there three years now and are happy. And I know a few north OT families who also have kids there and have no complaints.
