Seriously? This sounds like a bunch of New Age-y mumbo-jumbo. "Sense of ownership over their surroundings? What does that even MEAN? It's their locker. It's their. They'll feel ownership. Done. Not everything has to be overdone-done-done to the hilt. This is ridiculous.

This is the mom who will trick out her DD's college dorm room to look like a child's bedroom, all in the name of it being a "small, fun thing to do."

Are these locker/cubby decorating moms judging you for not decorating your son’s locker? Probably not. Grow up and find something real to get worked up about.

Exactly, either do it if you like that kind of thing or don't. Do what you want. Maybe your kid really wants it, maybe they don't care. It really isn't something to stress about. Personally, I am totally jealous that locker chandeliers didn't exist when I was a teen because that would have been awesome.

Like, totally! Rad awesome!

Sounds like some lame are southern mom crap to me, OP. Since you asked. Are these the same moms that try to socially engineer their daughters groups, and act surprised when that crap blows up in their face? Wow.

And decorate her first cubicle and plan DD’s entire wedding and commandeer DD’s eventually baby registry...

I’m the PP, and decorating a dorm room sounds like a fun challenge. I’m not sure what college kid would want their dorm to look like a child’s bedroom, though. The other, downthread suggestions are definitely nms. I’m mostly a free ranger when it comes to developing independence in the physical (as opposed to online/tech) world.

..... and then move on to the baby and become the grandma who insists on joining the Parent Association and doesn't understand why she can't be a room parent.

The unbelievable part is that an adult woman can work herself into a state of annoyance over locker decorations.

Sorry, but it’s a pretty fun, low effort + high reward parenting move. Part of our back to school shopping includes finding magnets (stickers seem inconsiderate) that the kids like, hanging lights or disco balls, and organizational shelving. It makes them happy, they feel like they have their own space in the school, and it costs me very little time and energy.

When my youngest son started school, he really missed our dog during the day, so we taped a silly photo of the dog in his cubby. It made him happy to see it during the day and helped ease his transition. In that case, it made a meaningful difference in my son’s day.

As for the “new-agey” part, half the battle in life is being able to walk into a space and feel comfortable and confident enough to make it your own, to own a room or a campus, courtroom, or company. If I can begin to teach that with a few locker decorations when they’re young, then great.

You do you. The OP is the one who comes across as competitive and intolerant.
