This interrogation is a bit much.

Just mention to BIL how good it was to see him at the ice cream shop when your sister is in the room. See what happens.

Op you have a simple question. See how he answers it. You don’t have to be dramatic or ask in front of your sister. It’s a simple Q and his answer will tell you everything you need to know.

Agree that you ask and let him do all the talking. Maintain eye contact, be open and listen, ask follow up questions like you would with any other conversation.

The BIL assumes you’re going to say something to your sister so he’s been getting his story together. You’re better off talking to him directly. And you could go back to the shop and ask the gal how she knows BIL.
