I'm an experienced home baker and baking cakes is a particular pleasure of mine. But when it comes to a classic layer cake a good store bakery can bake very good and very reliable layer cakes. As long as the ingredients are good it will be just fine and tasty. Even a basic cake mix can be quite good (the ones to avoid are the ones that have weird flavors or add pudding), and of course, storemade icing is to be avoided at all cost. Just keep in mind not all supermarket bakeries are created equally and some, like Wegmans, are decidedly better than others.
Never had a good store bought cake. I make my own

No. I can drive to Giant and back in 15 minutes with a cake that is delicious and made of the same ingredients of a homemade cake and costs less certainly for a larger cake.

Anonymous wrote:This thread is interesting. I've tried a few of their "slices" and found them to be really, really lacking (dry, chemical tasting icing, no flavor). I never bought a whole cake for this reason.
