It doesn't matter much in K and they will definitely need a bigger one within a couple of years. Their style and interests will also change. Our cheap Target backpacks lasted for all of K and 1st. Enjoy this time before they care about brand names and have to lug around a lot of stuff.
I disagree. The Target ones will fall apart. We've had our lands end ones for 4 years now, washed them regularly, and they still have a lifetime of wear in them. Get a high quality one.
How did you wash them? Just in the washing machine? What cycle? We have a PBK one that's in great shape but in desperate need of a good wash.
Pre-treat any stains, wash on the gentle cycle, and then hang to dry.
I'm not sure we are even that nice to it. Dump in wash, remove and let dry.
Pro tip: be sure to check all pockets for food, paint, play dough.... it can go south quickly if you don't!
Which brand was that? I'd like to get one that will survive the washing machine. I washed our preschool backpack every week along with the nap blanket...

You really don't need a lifetime of wear for a kid-sized backpack!
Have you met elementary school kids? Nothing gets more beat up in our house than their backpacks! A cheap one will fall apart the third time they drop kick it across the playground.

+1. I got a Target one for me to use on kid-type outings and the tab came off the zipper after a few months. I still use it, but would go with a better made one for K.
