This is what is different. There is no pre-algebra anymore for kids that did Math 7 in 6th grade---they are now being pushed into Intensified Algebra in 7th, followed by Intensified Geometry in 8th. When we started, the math path was Math 7 for 6th, Intro To Algebra in 7th and then Intensified Algebra in 8th. This was for a GT Math kid.

We got a letter in the Spring saying that now they were having those same kids do HS level Intensified Algebra in 7th when it used to be planned for 8th.

My kid had such a shitty Math 7 teacher last year that even though he had high test scores and was recommended for Intensified Alg. I---I am probably going to have him drop down into the pre 7/8th Algebra in 7th so he can get the strong foundation the teacher did not provide last year. Hopefully, we will get a better teacher. This year I will do what I should have done last year---demand to be moved to a different class.

SOL's for 5th graders started arriving this week, and the Math Inventory got sent to us in late June.

Kid with a 1320 and 600 is definitely destined for advanced math. However, 5th grade kid with the above 1200+ scored well above the needed 1130 to be considered as 6th Grade Advanced Range for end of the year (6th Grade proficiency was 870 to 1120).

I'm interested in this as well, anyone know the scores to make it into Pre-Algebra for 6th Grade, specifically Williamsburg?

Is this going to turn into Fairfax with their obsessive posting of scores for their advanced program. Please tell me no.

Next year - 6 th graders that did Marh 7 are going into Intensified Algebra I in 7th grade. The kids going into 8th did not jump this path. They had “intro to Algebra” in 7th and will be in Intensified Algebra in 8th. Next year’s 7th graders will be in Intensified Geometry in 8th—essentially moved a year up.

Teachers can make a big difference, especially during programmatic transition years like this.

Does anyone know who is going to be teaching Math 678 at WMS this fall?

My older child had some great math teachers at WMS on the old accelerated track, so I’m hoping we may see one of them again this fall when my younger child starts 678...
