ASA Red team U9 could have hung with colombia today. They looked terrible, but ASA, being ASA is THAT good.

OP, agree that a 10 year old in the US should play US style soccer; the fundamentals learned in Germany will carry over just fine; laces kicking and running really fast is all he needs for next few years and pass only when trapped or someone open in the box is typical.

Helped that Colombia had a player sent off in the 3rd minute, though.

This World Cup actually hasn't been a banner tournament for possession soccer. Germany had plenty of possession against Mexico, but no one would think they had the better of play.

True but Colombia got the red card fair and square. 11 vs 10 is not the reason Japan played possession. They have been trying to pursue that style from a long time ago.

You can play a good possession game or a bad one. It also depends on how your opponent performed. The same can be argued for Portugal vs Spain though I think Spain did much better than Germany.

We spent last 3 years in Germany and our 10 year old boy is a fish out of water still at the end of season in rec.
He is very technical and in practice they use him as the model/example for everything; but in the games no one actually passes like they practice or designed.
He loves soccer but does not understand to shoot and break out whenever possible. He won’t stop passing and play our style and i am not sure if we need to drill it in his head to play the way the other boys play or if our sons style is right and his team is wrong.

Your son needs to adapt to American soccer, our style of play is not, and will not be European style anytime soon. Not in your son's soccer lifetime anyway. America is spending more money than ever on soccer and actually get worse at the top levels; it will be another decade or two as our Women's team gets eclipsed and maybe, just maybe people will notice we are playing pretty much a different sport, just happens to have the same rules.

People used to scoff at the West Coast offense before the Niners. They have to be educated, or stick to watching those other sports if you’re looking for slam dunks.
