way to NOT be helpful. A two week vacation to see family in central america (my kid attends a DCPS that is 70% latino and high poverty, but go on with your racist assumptions) is very different than missing over 30 days and still bringing in failing grades when you are in attendance.

These 64 kids, did they miss 10 days of class or 30? Must be nice to pass your classes without ever showing up...

The legislation only affects the 64 students that are currently moderately off track for graduation soley due to an absence technicality, not an academic one.

These 64 students completed the work in the fall and passed courses, but due to the automatic failure formula applied to course attendance in the SPRING. This was done AFTER fall courses were completed. These 64 students are now in limbo to not graduate.

3. How do unexcused absences affect a student’s grades?

A student’s attendance impacts her/his grades at three key points:

? When a student reaches her/his 5th unexcused absence, she/he will receive a grade reduction
(see table below for details).

? When a student reaches her/his 10th unexcused absence, she/he will receive an “FA” (failure
due to absence) for the term. An FA will count as an F for the term, and will be averaged with
other term grades for a final course grade.

? When a student reaches her/his 30th unexcused absence, she/he will receive an F for the entire
course.

From the May 13th DCPS Report to the Committee on Education

The districtwide transcript review after Term 3 shows that 46 percent (1,676 students) of the 2018 cohort are on track to graduate in June.

The February update after Term 2 showed that 42 percent of the 2018 cohort was on track to graduate in June.

? DCPS estimates that more students will become on?track for graduation in June and August 2018 by completing their current courses with passing marks or by taking and passing credit recovery courses and/or summer school.

? There are 3,623 students in the DC Public Schools class of 2018 cohort. This number excludes 350 students who are projected to be removed from the DCPS cohort because OSSE has granted approvals on documentation showing students have transferred to another school system. DCPS expects more students to be removed from the cohort once all documentation is submitted and reviewed by OSSE.

? There are 21 percent of students (758 students) in the cohort who are moderately off?track for graduation. These students are failing at least one course or need at least one additional course required for graduation. Among these students:

o 8 percent (64 students) have received only automatic failures due to absence.

o 23 percent (174 students) have received both automatic failures due to absence and failures for academic reasons.

o 69 percent (520 students) have received only failures for academic reasons or are missing a required course for graduation.

? There are 11 percent of students (408 students) in the cohort who are significantly off?track for graduation. These students are not expected to graduate in June or August 2018. Among these students:

o 4 percent (16 students) have received only automatic failures due to absence.

o 36 percent (148 students) have received both automatic failures due to absence and failures for academic reasons.

o 60 percent (244 students) have received only failures for academic reasons or are missing a required course for graduation

and by the way... MOST people incarcerated in dc are NOT graduates of any high school... not even a DC high school.

Most of you have not read the proposal, nor understand how attendance is taken (at some schools only once per day, at others seven times per day. Data entry is terrible with DCPS.
