Hilton Head!

We're a family of 6 and just did a week in Myrtle Beach for $3500. It was awesome.

We flew Spirit airlines (cheap and fine for short flights). It cost $1000 for all of us. and rented a minivan for $400.
Next year, we'll try driving.

We rented a 2 bedroom timeshare at Sheraton Broadway Plantation for $1400. It's not on the beach, but a mile away and we went there 2 days- perfect for our young kids.
The Sheraton had like 4 pools, a pirate ship, a lazy river, mini golf, etc. My kids loved it.

Take a look at Redweek.com. Timeshare owners renting out their units for like $1000-$2000/week. Good ones at Sheratons, Marriotts, Hiltons. Really very nice. We've rented from that website 3 times now and had good experiences.

Bermuda. There are inexpensive VRBO places that you can get nightly or for a week. Roundtrip flights are super easy and direct. If you self-cater for breakfast and some dinners, you can go out for dinner a couple times and grab lunch at beach side options. Tobacco Bay is fun.

If you go the very last week of August (when many schools will be back in session), you can rent a large home on Kiawah for around $3500-4k for the week and enjoy quieter beaches.

+1. We go to Indian Rocks Beach every summer for a week. $200/pp for flights, nice 3 bedroom condo with pool on the water for $2,000 and $300 for car rental.

Rent a beach house around the Charleston or Savanah areas and drive.

I cannot imagine dropping $5k for a trip to Pittsburgh. We've been to Pittsburgh, Philly, NYC, etc. None of those cities can hold our attention for 5-7 nights. Those are long weekend trips at best, and they only cost $1k to $1,500 (when driving).

What about options in the $6k range?

You must be a pretty boring person to not find plenty to do in each of these 3 cities for 5-7 nights! You sound full of yourself.

Drive to Asheville, NC. Beautiful there, huge range of activities.

There was a whole thread a while back about Mont Tremblant. I haven't done it yet (it's on my list), but when I looked there were lots of nice houses on beautiful lakes that were considerably less expensive than comparable houses in Maine. You could also visit Montreal.

Yes -- when you book late, generally all that is left are the one bedrooms and the really huge (expensive) houses. Sometimes there are cancellations, though, so it's worth looking.

I know you said not Disney but look at the Disney Vacation Club on Hilton Head... great Disney customer service, but without the rides/characters, etc.

Consider Puerto Rico; we went in August a few years ago. About $2000 for flights, $2000 for 2 hotel rooms for a week. Relax on the beach, with some breaks to see Old San Juan and the rain forest. There might be some package deals.
