My friend drove from NE to midwest and she is driving again to pick him up at end of semester. Why? She loves the time in the car w him and there were long talks!

We flew with DC, since we had never seen the school, and basically served as mules. We shared a single suitcase and gave the rest of our baggage allowance to DC. We also ordered and shipped linens and a starter set of toiletries, first aid items, etc. from Target or wherever. We got a big rental SUV, which turned out to be necessary. We took all but two large suitcases home with us. It was actually fairly simple.

We provided boxes and said, "this is the volume of stuff you can take. Fill it up as you wish" (didn't reveal, yes, we would have provided more if really needed .. and I did check-on, a little, re: true essentials) Otherwise, she packed what she wanted. She did make some odd decision, I thought (no comment from me at the time) She packed lots of stuffed animals, and costume-type things. Must have expected to go to lots of costume parties.

Just remember that everything doesn't necessarily need to go at the same time. You can hold back the heavy-duty winter gear and ship it in October.

What a helpful thread! Will keep checking back for more advice/tips. I think shoes will be the hardest for my DD to pack/limit. Hoping to convince her she doesn't need everything, but will be tough since August will be warm and by Nov it will be cold/boot weather.
