I think these kids could pass as white. They look like some of the really “weird” white kids I went to school with. And if I saw two guys show up late to an organized group somewhere wearing all black, death metal (or whatever) clothes, refusing to give names and just skulking around... yeah I might be suspicious or nervous too unless I knew the tour organizer had checked them off as signed up. Would I call the cops? Probably not, but mostly because I am not assertive. But I would be whispering to DH and we might quietly leave.
I don’t think this woman did the right thing necessarily, but I don’t know that it was racism. Why wasn’t it sexist?
The caller thought they were Hispanic, not white. What does it mean to “just skulk around”? Since when is wearing heavy metal T-shirts dangerous? But really, go ahead and leave when faced with such a serious situation as sharing the tour with guys like these. I wouldn’t mind. Wish the caller had chosen that option also.
One deliberately told her he was Mexican
No, he likely didn't. Listen to the transcript. She said on the call that he responded that way. she probably misheard him say "New Mexico," which is where he is from.
He absolutely did. Then laughed

The cop then requested backup, got a drug sniffing dog and proceeded to search, pulling out the spare tire and everything, looking for drugs. They didn't have any drugs and after a couple of hours they were let go. Sometimes you are targeted for not looking clean cut. The woman was crazy but the cops at the college tour should have handled it better.
Exactly! The woman said during her phone call that she could be wrong and that she wasn't sure. The police should definitely have been more sensitive that expressed doubt, especially when they met the two young men, who by all accounts were shy and courteous.

I agree. Reading some De Becker stuff actually put me on a path to learning about how to overcome implicit bias. He explains the kinds of situations actual criminals take advantage of and what to avoid. It lead me to being more analytical about threat assessment, not to just "go with my gut." The direct result of this was that I learned to actually LOOK AT people and situations rather than just my gut.
Actual black criminals take advantage of stupid white women who think "looking racist" is the Worst Thing Ever.
