This is ours (but a lower GPA by a bit) and she got in. Hopefully if it doesn't get tougher she will be fine. This year was exceptional because too many kids accepted last year and they had to cut back on admits this year. Perhaps that was a fluke and things will settle down next year.

What I gathered from the College Confidential thread was you could have a much lower gpa and SAT if you were from OOS. Which sucks, but money talks.....

THIS, right here, makes me sick. All the taxes we pay to live in VA and support these schools, and then preference is given to OOS for their higher tuition. It truly makes me ill.

Same thing for UVA, it really concerns me as my oldest is applying for colleges in a few years. It’s a budget balancing method, and it sucks for instate students.

I saw kids with GPAs in the 3.2-3.7 range posting that they got in, so maybe major is even more significant that ever before.

Or a combination of major and interest.

We don't have any real numbers to support this, so let's not get doom and gloom on this.

How many unique people are on the College Confidential thread? 20? If 30,000 people applied, there is not enough significant evidence to draw conclusions.

itll be interesting when the Common Data Set comes out.

Congrats and I totally understand what you are saying. I don't think our DD who got into UVA two years ago would get in today. It's changed that much statistically in just two years. VT is a great school. We toured but they were clear you needed at least a 4.0 for engineering. I still remember a poor woman in the Engineering Day see that figure posted and asked "How does one get a GPA higher than a 4.0?" and the air in the room sucked in. It's a rat race from beginning to end and a huge learning curve for the parents. I get irritated when I see ignorant posts about what some cruelly call "the lesser Virginia schools" having no idea the GPAs it now takes to get into GMU, JMU, VT, etc. For most good students in NoVA, W&M and UVA isn't going to happen.

OP here. Well it sounds like lots of great kids got waitlisted or denied - had no idea it was this crazy. Congrats to those who did get in. I hope those that didn't land somewhere that suits them.

I haven't talked to DD yet but she texted she got in - she is away on a gap year. I better make sure she clicked on the second page from what I just read on CC.

She didn't apply to COE, had no time for school visit, comes from a lower FCPS, 3.97UW/1300SAT-took it 1 time, strong EC, strong writer, compelling stories to tell, interested in science/nutrition. She will now go for a visit with her cousin who did get into SOE (top private, smart girl whose grades/scores fit COE profile).
