It'll be interesting to see how big their waitlist is. Interesting to see if they reject the tippy top kids assuming it's a safety for them. Interesting if showing interest has become a major factor.
That's exactly what my Dh and I were discussing last night--maybe our more "mediocre" kid actually has a better chance of acceptance than a kid that's already HYPSM bound.
I don't know what you think "Mediocre" is, but I've found the SCHEVE statistics to be very helpful. Go here and plug in Virginia Tech and you will get the GPA for students who actually enrolled in 2017-2018 (and SAT scores). For the 6393 enrolled students, 25th percentile had a 4.21 or better; the median was 4.00; and the lowest 25th percentile was 3.78. Good luck! http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp
These stats are weird. Why such low SAT/ACT scores with such high GPAs. Something is off.
Schreve doesn't report ACT scores for Virginia Tech. Are you on the right entry? type in Virginia Tech and be sure to hit "enter".

ThanksBut everyone is saying that it is much more competitive this year--that in previous years 70+% got accepted, and this year it's 56%. So I'm thinking the 2017-18 stats won't necessarily reflect this years acceptances.
The decrease in acceptance rate tells us nothing about the caliber of students. It does let us know the number of kids rejected went up. If a school is only accepting 70 kids and 100 apply that’s 70% acceptance rate. If 140 apply that’s a 50% acceptance rate. Either case the 70 “best” kids were accepted.

As admissions get tougher across the board, kids are applying to more schools and schools are saying no to more kids.
It can't quite be so simple. There are only so many kids (and that's actually decreasing) and there are a certain amount of spots. In the end, each kid goes to one spot. VT can't just get more selective, or more kids will turn them down. Their place in the heirarchy is unchanged. What is true is that things are more random, but not clearly more selective.
Colleges don’t know what other colleges a kid applies to. Some kids with great applications may get accepted everywhere, knocking regular kids out of the running.
