Uh...Loudoun had no alliance with Spirit, who are a completely failed academy system. Heard that was dissolving. Check your sources.

The Spirit DA Academy is not going to go away. US Soccer and the NWSL want/need the NWSL DAs to be successful. If anything I would think US Soccer will be working with those clubs to provide stronger offerings.

This sounds like a Trump quote. “Spirit is a totally failed academy! Sad!”

You heard Spirit was dissolving?! Please dish more about this otherwise unheard of rumor. I thought I had good sources but never heard a peep of this. You should post under a username as if this is true, your status will be, wait for it,

I doubt MYS needs an alliance with Arlington, as girls just come over on their own if they want to. MYS recently voted to drop its Boys DA entirely beginning in 2018-19. They only had U12 boys DA, but they are now looking at Boys ECNL instead, in addition to their existing CCL option. I guess they didn't like losing boys to Arlington and Loudoun DAs for U13 and U14. With McLean going all in on ECNL for girls (and boys), it may figure it can survive by grabbing players at the 2nd tier who are focused on the HS issue and not ready for DA. I could see Loudoun making the same bet for its girls. Probably a better long term pathway then having no option for Loudoun parents and girls to feel like they are still playing at an elite level, even though they didn't or couldn't do the FCV girls DA option. It may work. ECNL may survive as 2nd tier, with Loudoun and McLean playing it's third tier in CCL.

There was just no way the Loudoun/FCV merger was going to be sustainable long term.

As for the next partner? It would have to be a club small enough that could benefit from merging with FCV in any capacity. It would also have to be a club that is established enough to have field space. And finally, it wold have to expand their footprint away from Loudoun.

At this point, I'm not sure FCV needs a partner. The Loudoun deal did very little for the club... FCV got a pathway to DA for their boys, and they picked up a handful of girls, but there is very little sharing of coaching resources or field space. And now that FCV has had some success in GDA, they will continue to draw the top girls in the area with or without Loudoun. The only real need FCV has is for field space but it's not clear to me that there are any clubs in close enough proximity that have that to offer. It's also quite possible that Loudoun and FCV will retain their arrangement and allow second tier player movement to Loudoun from FCV. Although that could put a chink in FCV's pipeline a bit so it seems like a long shot.

Arlington

Big enough not to need FCV and tight on field space. NOPE!

Next!

+1

add in that it just applied for its own full DA.

but isn't everyone assuming they'll never get awarded a full DA? wouldn't affiliating with FCV give them a similar set up as they have with the boys and DCU?

The geography is to much to overcome without FCV finding a closer partner to Arlington.
