I am not a teacher but our school district (MCPS) expects way more of teachers than is reasonable IMO. Especially since we are at a Focus school.

ALL school districts expect way more from teachers than what is reasonable. Teachers need to stop allowing themselves to be walked over.

She is working the appropriate amount. It's completely unreasonable to expect teachers to just do it all. If schools/society expects more, they need to find the resources to make it happen, not just have unreasonable expectations on teachers.

I'm laughing, not because running out of paper is actually funny. I'm laughing because I can relate. I'm the OP and once I taught in a district where we'd run out of toilet paper for the entire school each winter. Teachers were told to bring toilet paper from home for the staff bathrooms. My students went without TP because we were so mismanaged. I don't think most people have any concept of the deep dysfunction of most schools.

The school I worked at was like this too!! Also, no kleenex for the classrooms and no handsoap in the bathroom (so gross). In addition, we had to fill out a form to get a whiteboard marker and were limited in the number we could get.

Our school district is the height of dysfunction but we just flat out don't have the money to buy paper to last all year. I was observed a few years ago (it was one of the many drop in visits by various people from th district whose get paid a lot of money to do God knows what). My principal said she liked what we were doing but said it was poor practice to have students copy from the board. Well, give me some more paper and then that wouldn't happen.

Haha, no. We can’t even get subs for absences entered into the system days in advance. There are no extra staff members on hand. What is the position of this person in your school?

School based sub in APS. It’s genius! It’s better than having an unknown sub and she is there every day.

I do the same as you do, except for the above. I can't commit to any clubs, but find I benefit from the visibility of showing up to evening events if I can possibly fit them into my schedule. Priority to anything the principal is running and needs help with.

That's a good idea though! But how do you make sure she can cover for you for a dentist appt, if she might get called last minute to cover for a sub who cancelled? Is there some limit at your school to how often a teacher could use this for appointments? Of course they would put in for the leave, but only for an hour needed, not the full 4 hours?
