I have a kid in high school who loves to write (editor for school newspaper) and has expressed interest in studying journalism in college. Are the job prospects that bad in this field? What would you recommend for a kid who has a passion for journalism to study in college?

It isn't necessary for good reporting, but the bias in hiring is almost as bad as in law firms.

Really? My husband is a journalist and most of the people he hires haven't gone to J school. Instead they wrote for their school paper and/or interned somewhere during or after college. It is a good field for working your way up if you are willing to do things that aren't glamorous (covering zoning hearings, etc).

Dramaturgy- the theory and practice of dramatic composition. "studies of Shakespeare's dramaturgy". Sounds great.

Masters of Public Policy. I hire GR positions, and people with this degree go to the bottom of my pile.

I have an MBA from a top 20 program.

Before, I was making $35k ( this was about 15 years ago) with my liberal arts degree from a top school.

Graduated and got a job making $72k. I was $90k in debt but paid it off diligently over 5 years. This is in marketing, not investment banking.

10 years later and I make more than double that, but with very good work life balance.

Plus I learned a ton in business school. (Accounting, stats, strategy, org behavior, m and a, etc) and made connections.

I could have gotten my current job without an MBA but it would have been much harder.

I'd say MBA is worth it, if you go to s good school and are very realistic about what job you can get afterwards. (Not everyone is going to be working on Wall Street or moving to Ohio to work for P&g in marketing.

I say worth it, especially if you go to a top school and realize

I know plenty of MBA's that received decent promotions/new jobs or careers after competition of their program. Obviously these degrees are from Top 50 programs

I know several people in investing banking with MBAs and most make a LOT of money. Two of them didn't even go to a top 20 MBA program.

Yeah- after paying for my husbands 90k program I agree. He’s a high earner and it didn’t up his earnings enough to justify the two years of hell.

I’d disagree. I earn mid 6 figures and could earn more if I wanted to work harder. I also got at least 50% of my tuition paid through scholarships. It’s totally paid off.
