I grew up in Ohio and graduated from Ohio State for undergrad - still go back pretty frequently to visit and Columbus is shockingly cosmopolitan these days (compared to my mid-90-'s college days). School is definitely not for everyone, but one can definitely find a place there given the enormity of the population, and students from all over the world who are there for engineering, agriculture, medicine, arts... the Wexner Center on campus is amazing as is the marching band I HATE football and somehow made it through. A student will not have his or her hand held AT ALL, but can work to find mentors and people who will help. I did my graduate work at a private university and almost fell out of my chair when a financial aid officer called me to make some suggestions and help me out proactively - that NEVER would have happened at Ohio State (even though I was in the honors program).

It's an enormous research university with an intense football culture. Of schools fitting that profile, I'd prefer Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Texas (largely because I prefer their respective hometowns), but OSU might be 5th.

Re: size. It is large -- but as someone said, it's kind of insulated from Columbus and feels smaller because of it. Class sizes for most non-freshman classes are actually reasonable. There actually aren't that many huge lecture halls.

Good facilities, as you would expect. Library and student union are both new(ish).

Columbus is actually great. The area right around the campus is kind of trashy, I guess, but not terrible and pretty normal for big universities. Think: Urban Putfitters, Chipotle, liquor store, all-night donut store.

It has a lot of spirit. OSU love runs deep, football is important (but no one is going to shame you if you're not into it), there are lots of traditions, and it's really 'close' for being so huge.

Would I go as an undergrad? Not sure. But the class sizes are significantly smaller than I would have thought (based on stereotyping), independent and motivated kids would do well, and you 100% can find your people. And I do miss the fall in Ohio...

Ohio State is ranked 54th highest university in the country. For reference, there are about 3000 four year colleges in the US. I wonder what words you'd use to describe the kids at the other 2946 schools that rank below it?
