Yes, and yes, they do. Visit Utah sometime. Plenty of guys shilling magnets, shakes, Thrive patches, energy supplements, Amway--which is huge with dentists, etc. Utah is the birthplace of the MLM industry, which should come as no great surprise if you're familiar with the culture there.

Man, I was having a discussion with a longtime friend about MLM. Her mom has been with Arbonne for like 30 years so my friend practically grew up in it. Now she works at a low-paying and stressful office job but is doing Arbonne on the side because she really wants to make that her main gig.
Last night she was lamenting that she works so hard at her day job but can't seem to make any money doing Arbonne. She thinks if she just puts herself out there more she will be making thousands a month. She sees these young Instagram thots who are super made up and hot making an insane amount of money and driving the Mercedes (equivalent to the pink Mary Kay Cadillac) shilling this garbage and doesn't understand that it's almost impossible to get to that level. She truly believes if she just worked harder at selling this SUPER OVERPRICED skin cream she would be rich and she beats herself up for it. It's very culty and they brainwash women into a conservative "bootstraps" mentality that if they just work hard they'll succeed.
I'm pretty gentle with her about it and always smell her seasonal garbage and look through the catalogue but the stuff is truly so expensive for the ingredients - I love skincare and know what works for my skin, and the active ingredients aren't all that great. Luckily I'm unemployed right now so have a good excuse not to buy a f**king $98 serum. I don't know. I try to convince her it's not a good use of her time or money but she still buys a $400 box of shit every quarter.
The market is so oversaturated with this stuff now and with social media everyone is sick of hearing about your MLM product. I think when it was just Mary Kay and Avon and it was all in catalogues and parties offline it was probably easier, but it's a whole different animal now. I feel bad for these women who are sold on it.

It's the power of magical thinking, man. Logic doesn't play a part in it, they so badly want to believe they can make a living without having a dumb office job, they'll fall for the MLM marketing pitch. It's like when I believed my college boyfriend really meant it this time that he was going to stop banging other chicks. Of course he was gonna keep banging other chicks but my god did I want to believe otherwise so I did.
